MHS Will Host Senior Night Saturday
Jasper County High School will celebrate Hurricane Senior Night on Saturday, Jan. 28 while hosting the Greene County Tigers.
The Senior Night program will be performed following the varsity girls game and before the varsity boys tip-off at approximately 8:30 p.m. The ceremony is intended to honor those seniors, along with their parents, affiliated with the basketball program as athletes, managers, and statisticians.
The varsity squads will head into this weekend competitions in preparation for post-season region activities beginning, Jan. 31.
Both squads will look to regain their region composure after sweeps by North Oconee last Friday and Westside of Augusta on Tuesday.

The Lady Canes now 5-8 in the region fell 52-39 to North Oconee last week. After a 19-19 score at the half, the momentum just didn’t swing the Lady Canes way. However going 17-of-32 from the free throw line didn’t help.
Waveka Bledsoe led the scoring with 11 points; Shondra Williams and Shaquala Thurman, 10 points each; Brittany Standifer and Shawanna Sands, 3 each; and Talisha Smith, 2.
Against Westside the ladies lost 60-49. Missed opportunities with free throws again hurt the Lady Canes, making only 10-of-20. Standifer led the scoring with 14 points; Thurman, 10; Williams, 8; Jasmine Pennamon and Dominique Redd, 5 each; Bledsoe, 3; and Sands, 2.
The Gentleman Canes have hit a rough spot after claiming victory over Morgan County two weeks ago. The squad added two region losses to their record over the past week.
In the 40-31 loss to North Oconee, Markese Thurman scored 10 points; Nick Standifer, 9; Coddy Carter, 7; Brannon Hamm and James Lawrence, 2 each; and Octavious Epps, 1.
The Canes earned another heartbreaker while hosting Westside this week. The 61-59 loss was comparable to the one-point loss the Canes had against Josey, another Augusta school, last month. Statistically free throws could have made all the difference in the outcome of the game. Making only 12-of-30 attempted free throws definitely hurt the team.
Standifer had a good game finding his comfort zone from three-point range early with 12 points in the first quarter. He finished the game with 26 points including 4-of-7 free throws.
Carter contributed 11 points with 3-of-12 free throws; Thurman had 10 points with 5-of-9 free throws; Hamm, 6; Epps, 4; and Lawrence, 2.
At this point in the season every win helps with the region tournament approaching. Varsity has three remaining games and all are region. They will travel to Josey tomorrow, Jan. 27 for a 6 p.m. tip-off before returning home to host Greene on Saturday. Their last regular season game will be at Laney next Saturday, Feb. 4.
