Middle School ‘Canes Tie In Consolation Competition

The Monticello Middle School ‘Canes finished the 2005 season Wednesday, Oct. 5, with a tie score of 36 with Carver Middle School of Monroe.

The game proved to be the most exciting of the season for both schools. Down 8-6 at the half, the ‘Canes rallied in the second half to finish regulation with a scored tied at 22.Upon the completion of two overtime periods, the two schools were still knotted at 36. Because of a 7 p.m. curfew, the game had to be called and officially declared a tie.

Touchdowns were scored by Keldrick Davis (2), Christian McCorley, Brandon Vinson, and Joe Standifer. Other outstanding offensive performances went to Myles Campbell, Chris Sands, and the offensive line. Defensive standouts were Shane Parham, Bre Herrington, Rick Williams, and James Kelly. Outstanding special teams play was provided by Cordell Peacock.

Previously in the year the ‘Canes lost to Morgan County, 20-6; Greene County, 14-6; and Loganville, 18-14. Victories for the ‘Canes came against GMC, 36-0, and Carver, 14-12. Monticello’s final record was 2-3-1.

“It was a year in which we were in every ball game. A few less mistakes and a few breaks here or there and the season could have been really different in terms of wins and losses,” said Coach Mike Johnston. “I am extremely proud of the team. From early August to now, these young men have shown great improvement. They have continually worked hard and exhibited excellent attitudes.

“I look foward to working with the seventh graders again next year, and anticipate that the eighth graders going up to the high school can be of benefit to Coach [Doug] Huff and the high school team.
