Gene Wilson

Eugene Wilson, Jr., 80, died Friday, Sept. 30, at the Retreat Nursing Home.

Gene Wilson was born in Warthen and grew up in Milledgeville. His parents were the late Willie Eugene Wilson and Gertrude “Pinkie” May Wilson.

He graduated from Georgia Military College and the University of Georgia. Mr. Wilson served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He lived in Stone Mountain for a number of years before moving to Jasper County in 1974.

He was an active member of the Monticello First United Methodist Church and the Doers Sunday school class. He served on the Administrative Council and volunteered with the American Red Cross. He retired from Sun Finance of Cleveland, Ohio and after moving to Jasper County, owned and operated The Plant Parlor for 17 years. He was an avid gardener.

Survivors include his wife, Wynona “Nona” Calton Wilson of Monticello; children and their spouses, Michael Eugene and Carol Wilson of Lilburn and Floyd Steven and Gladys Wilson of Monticello; grandchildren, Patrick Michael Wilson, Brandie Lynn Giroux and Kenny Bridges; great- grandchildren, Preston Giroux, Evan Giroux, Aiden Giroux, Jaryd Bridges, Jaidyn Bridges and Jiordana Bridges; and brothers and sisters, Carl Wilson of Weems, Va., and Lamar Wilson of War-renton, Sara English of Hephzibah, Margaret Wilson of Milledgeville and Pinkie Brutcher of Athens.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday at Jordan Funeral Home, 264 Hillsboro St., Monticello.

Funeral services are scheduled for Sunday, Oct. 2, at 2 p.m. at Monticello First United Methodist Church, with burial in West View Cemetery. Dr. John Brown and Rev. Gus Cole will officiate.

Pallbearers will be Frank Pool, Linton Jordan, James Atkins, Don Parrott, John Thornton, Randolph McMichael and Larry Smith.

The family suggests memorials to the Monticello First United Methodist Church New Building Fund, 651 College St., Monticello, Ga., 31064 or the Cardiac Research & Discovery Fund, 808 Gatewood Rd., Atlanta, GA 30322.

Jordan Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
