Diamond Cougars Lose Close Ones
The Piedmont Academy baseball team suffered two close defeats in recent days.
The Diamond Cougars battled Region 1-AA leader Brentwood to the wire Tuesday before falling 2-1. Brentwood used a two-run homer in the bottom of the sixth for the winning runs.
“We lost to Brentwood 7-4 earlier this season,” said Piedmont coach Danny Camp. “No one but us has competed with them in the region.”
Zack Kenny earned the start Tuesday for the Cougars. After struggling early (Brentwood loaded the bases in the first but did not score), Kenny settled down and did not allow any runs until the sixth.
Piedmont scored first on an RBI double in the top of the fifth from Taylor Jackson which allowed Joey Schroeder to cross home.

Last Thursday, the Diamond Cougars also dropped a tough 4-2 region contest to Edmund Burke. Leading 2-1 going into the top of the seventh, Edmund Burke rallied on the strength of a two-run homer. Piedmont couldn’t answer in the bottom half and fell by two runs.
“It was one of those games we felt like we should have won,” Camp said.
“It was a tough loss because the two of us are battling for third and fourth in the region.”
Cristopher Jackson pitched a strong game working into the seventh. Brent Brown and Andrew Stevenson were both 2-for-3 at the plate.
The Cougars also had RBIs from Clint Fields and Kenny.
Piedmont will have three key region games this week hosting Monroe Academy today, traveling to Edmund Burke Friday and also traveling to Briarwood Saturday for a rescheduled contest from earlier this spring. The games Thursday and Friday begin at 4 p.m. while Saturday’s contest is set to begin at noon.
“We need to improve offensively, Camp said. In the last eight games, we have really played well on defensive. We just need to get our offense going.”
Piedmont is now 7-6-1 overall and 2-4 in Region 1-AA.
