Morris Goolsby

Funeral services for Morris Goolsby, 73, were held October 16 at Rock Springs Missionary Baptist Church in Mansfield with burial in South View Cemetery in Monticello. The Rev. R.L. Browning officiated.

Mr. Goolsby was born May 5, 1931 to the late Jim Goolsby and Olivia Alexander Goolsby in Jasper County. In his youth, he joined and began a lifetime of service to the church. After briefly working with the Jasper County Lumber Company, he joined the U.S. Marine Corps and served one full tour. Upon his return from the service he married the late Vera Naomi Robinson and moved to Newton County where he spent the remainder of his years.

In Newton, he attended vocational training school for carpentry. He later began employment with Hercules, Inc. and retired after 25 years of service.

He was a member of Rock Springs Missionary Baptist Church and the Friendship Lodge #20 of Covington.

Survivors include his daughter, Virginia Cheryl Boateng; grandson, Patrick Boateng II, both of Beltsville, Md.; sisters, Ada Coatney of Atlanta and Opal Goolsby of Sparta; brothers, Willie James Goolsby and Ted Goolsby, both of Monticello, Jim Henry Goolsby of Virginia Beach, Va.; aunt, Lucy Goolsby Bell of Sparta; and a number of other relatives and friends.

Pallbearers were members of the Friendship Lodge #20.

Smith & Sons Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
