JV Cougars Undefeated
Piedmont Academy junior varsity football coach Chip Champion predicted his team would be tested against Gatewood last week.
As it turned out, Champion was right. The JV Cougars held off Gatewood for an 18-16 home win and improved to 6-0 this fall.
“It was the first real test we’ve had,” Champion said. “We did not play well, but Gatewood is still a good team.”
Piedmont struggled defensively in the first half allowing 16 points.
Offensively, Justin Atkins scored all three of the JV Cougars’ touchdowns including a 90-yard interception return in the first half.
The second half was the complete opposite from the first as neither team scored during the third or fourth quarters.
“I felt like we had to put the game on the shoulders of our defense,” Champion said. “They didn’t cross the 50-yard line in the second half. We also had some good punts that kept them backed up.”
The JV Cougars now have two games remaining on their 2004 schedule.
Piedmont will host Nathanael Greene today at 5 p.m. The JV Cougars defeated Nathanael Greene 12-6 in the first game of the season.
“I’m sure they have improved since then, and I feel we have gotten better,” Champion said.
