The varsity Monticello Hurricanes lost 35-6 to the Putnam County War Eagles Friday in Monticello.
The War Eagles gave the Hurricanes their second region loss of the season.
The ‘Canes looked good on their first possession of the game when they were mixing up the passing and running game. That sent Rett Bullard into the end zone giving the ‘Canes the first, and their only, score of the game.
They failed to get the extra point as the War Eagles were able to block the kick.
The ‘Canes had a hard time running and passing after that. The defense played well in the first half, keeping them in the game. At halftime, the War Eagles were up by two touchdowns, 21-6.
For the second half of the game the ‘Canes offense moved the ball well, and benefited from some War Eagle penalties, but was unable to get into scoring position.
The ‘Canes showed a lot of leadership for the second half of the game. The ‘Canes defense only gave up two scores in the half. The ‘Canes defense was also able to recover four fumbles that the War Eagles coughed up, but they were unable to capitalize on the turnovers.
One plus in the game was that the ‘Canes held tight in the fourth quarter, allowing no score. Unfortunately, they were unable to put any points on the board either.
Coach Doug Huff said the team played hard and put good effort into the game. He said the offense had a hard time moving the ball after the first possession and the defense played very well, but was beaten on a couple of big plays. He said he was happy with the team’s effort.
The varsity squad will travel to Augusta to face Westside for their third region game tomorrow, Oct. 1, at 7:30 p.m., so Hurricane fans are urged to support the team as they go for their first region win.
