Willie Whitting

Funeral services for Willie “Big Boy” Eugene Whitting were held January 31 at Mt. Zion A.M.E. Church in Shady Dale. The Rev. James Hardaway officiated.

He died January 27 at the Retreat Nursing Home.
Mr. Whitting was born August 22, 1919 to the late Ida Bell Odom and William Henry Whitting in Hillsboro. He joined Brown Chapel A.M.E. Church in Eatonton at an early age and later joined Mt. Zion A.M.E. Church in Shady Dale.

He was educated in the Jasper County School System before working as a logger. He was married to the late Annie Pearl Ross.
Four brothers preceded him in death.

Survivors include a daughter, Annie Jean Whitting Barkley; sister, Lucille Hardwick; grandchildren, Andrea “Bunkie” Barkley, Thomas “TW” Barkley; six grandchildren; and a number of other relatives and friends.

Smith & Son Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
