Piedmont controled the game from the start leading 11-1 at halftime and eventually holding a 21-3 lead. Lydia Morgan scored seven points to pace the JV girls while Kirstie Lewis added five and Jennifer Mobley scored four.

“We played our man-to-man defense well,” Brett said. “It was a very solid game for us.”

The Piedmont sixth-seventh grade girls team also battled Gatewood last week, but dropped a close 20-18 game. Trailing 11-7 at half-time, the Lady Cougars continued to trail by four points after the third quarter but had tied the game at 18 late.

Gatewood managed to score the winning basket in the final minute of the contest. Brittany Wilson finished with eight points for Piedmont while Julie Watson scored four.

“We played well,” Brett said. “Gatewood has a good team, but we hung in there with them. I was proud of the effort.”

Piedmont’s junior varsity boys did not play last week. The JV Cougars continue to hold a perfect record this season.

The Piedmont Academy junior varsity teams will host Nathanael Greene today, Jan. 29, at 6 p.m. before traveling to Oak Mountain Friday for games starting at 3:30 p.m. The junior varsity teams will then host Monroe Academy next Monday, Feb. 2, at 3:30 p.m.
