Mary Cordelia Pope

Mary Cordelia Pope, 87, died Friday, Jan. 16, at her residence in Jasper County.

Cordelia Pope was a lifelong resident of Jasper County. Her parents were the late Kerby Compton Pope, Sr. and Capers Ellis Pope. She was a member of Liberty Methodist Church and Monticello First United Methodist Church.

She loved beautiful flowers and the splendor of the woods. Animals were her passion and every stray had a home with her. She was a quiet person but had a great concern for all those around her. Before retirement, she was an assistant for a local doctor’s office.

Her brothers, K.C. Pope, Jr. and Ellis Pope, and great nephew, Zachary Tyler Martin preceded her in death.

Survivors include her sisters, Virginia Hafer of Monticello and Mozelle Wilbur of Decatur; beloved caretaker, Doll Pope of Monticello; nieces and nephews, Charles Pope of Cleveland, Kenneth Pope of Monticello, Kathy W. Martin of Monroe, Ellis Pope, Jr. of Gainesville, Fla., and Debbie Ford of Milledgeville; great nieces and nephews, Evelyn Pope, Kerby Pope, Olivia Thomason, Hunter Pope, Josh Martin, Amanda Pope, Melissa Pope, and Christopher Pope; and great-great niece and nephews, Jacob Pope, Kyle Smith, Payton Pope, Collin Martin, and Tucker Pope.

Funeral services were held Sunday, Jan. 18, at the chapel of Monticello First United Methodist Church, with burial in West View Cemetery. Dr. Phil DeMore and Rev. David Brackman officiated.

Pallbearers were Charles Pope, Kenneth Pope, David Martin, Ellis Pope, Jr., Kerby Pope, Josh Martin, Charles Brock, and Paul Kelly.

Jordan Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
