Hurricane Basketball Struggles
Monticello Hurricane basketball has had a dismal week racking up 11 losses out of 12 games between the six squads.
The middle school teams traveled to Social Circle Saturday morning. The boys squad, who lost five players this semester because of grades, were defeated 48-30. Octavious Epps led the scoring with 13 points; Darius Clemons, 9; JC Dunagan and Darius Colvard, 4 each.
With two games remaining on the schedule, the team is preparing for league play-offs that will begin next week. Post-season playoff possibilities will not be determined until the regular season concludes.

The middle school squads were to host Carson Middle School yesterday before finishing the season at GMC this Saturday at 10 a.m.
The junior varsity squads didn’t produce any victories over the weekend. The ‘Canes fell 63-35 to Hancock Friday and lost a close 49-46 competition to Oglethorpe Saturday.
Whichard Standifer led the scoring Friday with 10 points; Horace Shivers, 5; Cortez Dudley and Alvin Bailey, 4; Josh Campbell and Alton Standifer, 3; Vinny Wallace, 2; Tony Ridley and Michael Cook, 1.
Standifer also led against Oglethorpe with 16 points; followed by Shivers with 14; Brandon Hamm, 4; Campbell and Dudley, 3; Zaybo Jackson, Bailey and Wallace, 2.
The varsity Lady ‘Canes had the sole bright spot last week capturing a win at home against Hancock. The win was followed up with consecutive losses to two AA state ranked teams.
They loss 68-52 to the 10th ranked Oglethorpe Patriots on Saturday and 61-54 to Wilkinson County, ranked 13th, on Tuesday. No individual statistics were available for any of the girls squads.
The varsity ‘Canes had less success than their female counterparts earning three consecutive losses. They fell 49-39 to Hancock.
Thaxton “Scooter” Pennamon led with 11 points; Coddy Carter, 9; Damian “Petey” Tripp, 7; Arlandos “Sweetman” Grier, 6; Marcus Davis, 3; TJ Glawson, 2; and Neil Andrews, 1.
A 66-64 loss to the Patriots didn’t feel much better for the ‘Canes. Grier led with 22 points; followed by Tripp with 18; Glawson and Carter, 10; and Pennamon, 4.
Fourth ranked Wilkinson County handily defeated the ‘Canes 89-37 Tuesday on the road.
The junior varsity and varsity squads will host Morgan and GMC Friday and Saturday, according to a schedule from the school. JV action starts at 4 p.m. and varsity at 6 p.m. on Friday and Saturday’s action begins at 3 p.m. with the JV and 6 p.m. for the varsity.
