JV Cougar Boys Move to 5-0

The Piedmont Academy junior varsity boys basketball team improved to 5-0 with a 35-24 win against Monroe Academy Tuesday.

Christopher Hornibrook scored 16 points while Taylor Jackson added 11 to pace the JV Cougars. D.J. Allen and Cristopher Jackson both scored four.

“We probably didn’t play as well as we could have,” said JV boys coach Danny Camp. “We may have been a little rusty after the break. However, we still got the win and that¹s the sign of a good basketball team when it can win even when it doesn¹t play the best it can.”

Prior to Tuesday’s game, the JV boys defeated Gatewood 43-30 back on Dec. 20. Hornibrook poured in 25 points with Taylor Jackson totaling 11.
Will Eckerle added four points.

Camp’s sixth and seventh grade boys basketball team recorded a victory in its first game Monday with a 23-13 win against Monroe. Kale Blackshear was the leading scorer with eight points while Matthew Powell scored seven and Eckerle finished with six. Matt Adams added two points for Piedmont.

“This team played well,” Camp said. “We did well on the board despite the fact Monroe had the height advantage.”

The Piedmont Academy junior varsity girls fell to Monroe Academy 26-17 Tuesday. The JV Lady Cougars pulled to within 20-17 with two minutes left before Monroe put the game away.

Kirstie Lewis led Piedmont with 13 points including a 7-of-9 performance at the free throw line drawing the praise of coach Adam Brett. Priscilla Jones and Crystal Freeman both finished with two points.

“We played well,” Brett said. “I thought we really played well defensively.”

The Lady Cougars’ sixth-seventh grade team defeated Monroe Academy Monday 8-7.

“You are going to have low scoring games at that level,” Brett said. “The players also pick up defense quicker than offense.”

The game was tied with 10 seconds left when Beth Hamilton made a steal, drove down the court and was fouled. Hamilton then made a free throw with four seconds left to give Piedmont the win.

Hamilton finished the game with four points while Freeman and Brittany Wilson added two points each.
The Piedmont Academy junior varsity basketball teams will travel to Nathanael Greene today at 6 p.m. and host Oak Mountain Saturday beginning at 1 p.m. and Flint River Tuesday beginning at 3:30 p.m.

The sixth-seventh grade teams will host Brentwood Monday at 6 p.m.
