The varsity ladies split action over the weekend losing 40-60 in a stunner to Jones County. The squad failed to convert their sluggish performance to match that of the quick and aggressive Lady Greyhounds.
Leading the score board was Glawson with 17 points; Angie Barron and Thurman scored 7 each; Kelly, 4; Brittany Jackson, 3; and Tripp, 2.
Head coach Dionka “Dee Dee” Davis’ reprimands didn’t fall upon deaf ears Friday which was proved by Saturday’s 35-29 victory at GMC.
Glawson again led the scoring with 12 points; Jackson, 10; Angie Barron, 8; Angilette Barron and Kelly, 2 each; and Thurman, 1.
Since the season opener last week the varsity ‘Canes have stumbled a bit. However following Tuesday 57-42 loss at Mary Persons head coach Steve Spruell said he was encouraged by the teams improvement.
“It was the best I’ve seen the team play all year. There was significant improvement and we are on the road to being where we need to be. I’m seeing a tremendous effort on the defensive end.”
T.J. Glawson led the scoring with 12 points; Arlandos Grier, 10; Kyle Davis, 7; Thaxton “Scooter” Pennamon, 6; Damien Tripp, 5; and Antonio McGuire, 2.
The fellows lost a tough one at GMC which spectators feel could have had a little something to do with the officiating. Glawson was the points leader in the 32-29 loss. He had 14 points, nearly half of the final score. Grier added 8 points and Davis had 7 points.
The ‘Canes were unable to stop the Greyhounds losing 52-31. Grier was the leading scorer with 11 points including a slam dunk; McGuire had 6 points; Davis, 3; Tripp, Pennamon, and Neil Andrews, 2 each.
With their first region game this weekend Coach Spruell told the guys that the preseason was over.
The War Eagles come to town Saturday for a 7 p.m. varsity tip-off. The squads will rest until the Bank of Gray Classic Tournament in Jones County which begins next Thursday, Dec. 18.
