Middle School Basketball Begins

The Middle School Hurricanes began their season last Wednesday with losses in the opener at home and wins on the road.

The Lady ‘Canes, coached by newcomer Amanda Jenkins, fell 38-24 to Carver in the opener. Eighth grader Jasmine Pennamon led with 14 points; Chasity Cribbs and Niasha Davis, 3 each; Brittney Standifer and Dominique Reed, 2 each.

The ladies rebound nicely with a 27-24 victory over Morgan County on the road. Standifer led with 9 nine points; followed by Redd with 6; Pennamon, 4; Cribbs, 2; and Autumn Peterson, 1.

“I’m proud of the players, They played hard both games and never gave up,” said the coach.

Like their female counterparts, the boys squad fell prey to the Carver losing 42-39 in a close one. Eight grader Markese Thurman led the ‘Canes offense and defense with 18 points and 11 steals. He added 2 steals, 1 blocked shot, 2 assists, and 2 turnovers to his credit. The steals leader was C.J. Besley with 4 who also had 10 points, 6 rebounds, and 1 turnover.

Darius Clemons led in blocked shots with 3 while adding 4 points; 9 rebounds, 2 steals, and 2 turnovers; Lance Dennis had 2 points, 6 rebounds, 1 assist, and 3 turnovers; Caleb Reynolds had 2 points, 5 rebounds, 1 steal, and 5 turnovers; Clint LaVaughn had 2 points and 2 turnovers; Josh Boone had five rebounds, 1 steal, 1 assist and 3 turnovers; and Darius Colvard had five rebounds, 1 steal, and 5 turnovers.

The boys rebounded very nicely with a 46-35 victory over Morgan County on Friday. Markese Thurman had another tremendous game leading in the offensive and defensive charge with 32 points, 4 rebounds, 5 steals, 1 blocked shot, 2 assists, and 5 turnovers.

Besley followed the leader with 8 points, 2 rebounds, 2 steals, 1 assist, and 2 turnovers; Dennis had 4 points, lead in rebounds with 7, and had 1 turnover; and Boone had 2 points, 6 rebounds, 2 steals and 3 turnovers.

J.C. Dunagan and Clemons each added 1 rebound and 1 steal to the statistics while Lavaughn had 1 steal.

The squads were to host GMC before taking on Social Circle Dec. 12 on the road and hosting Morgan Wednesday, Dec. 17. The ladies tip-off at 4:30 p.m.
