‘Canes Win Homecoming Game

The Monticello Hurricanes continued their winning ways with a sound 34-6 beating of region opponent Oglethorpe County in Monticello last Friday.

Head Coach Doug Huff summed up the team’s performance on the night, “Everyone played well. Good things are going to happen anytime we move the ball on offense like we did and tackle as well as we did.”

The ‘Canes bounced back from a dismal game against Washington-Wilkes to give them one of their most lopsided wins in recent history.

Monticello set the tone early. The ‘Canes elected to receive and marched straight down the field on the first drive and scored on their first possession on the night. Senior fullback T.J. Glawson put the ball in the end zone for the Hurricanes, which put Monticello up 6-0.

Monticello did not allow the Patriots from Oglethorpe County to even come close to threatening the lead after the first score. On the ensuing Patriot drive Monticello’s defense stepped up and recovered a loose ball to give back possession to the Hurricanes. That drive resulted in a 65-yard sprit to the end zone by senior running back Kyle Davis. Glawson added the two point conversion for the ‘Canes. Monticello ended the first quarter with a 14-0 lead.

In the second quarter the Monticello defense led the charge, and did not allow the Patriot offense to get going before halftime. With Oglethorpe threatening to score Arlandos “Sweetman” Grier intercepted a pass on the ‘Cane 28 yard line.

With less than five minutes remaining in the half, Monticello was forced to punt but again came up with a big play to gain back possession.
Senior Kyle Gaston recovered a muffed punt return to give the ‘Canes another chance to score before halftime. Monticello again did not disappoint us, with 50 seconds remaining Davis added his second touchdown of the night with a 3 yard plunge to give Monticello a commanding 21-0 lead going into halftime.

With the game put away before it really got started Monticello coasted through the second half. This gave the team an opportunity to play many underclassmen that had not seen the field in a varsity game.

The Hurricanes added two more scores on the night, one by Senior Antonio McGuire on a 77-yard scamper and the other again by Glawson. Oglethorpe was able to put one score on the board against the ‘Cane second and third teams.

The ‘Canes were very efficient on the night offensively and defensively. Davis led all rushers with 122 yards and two touchdowns. Junior quarterback Rett Bullard was 3 for 5 passing with 48 yards.

Defensively the ‘Canes entire team got in on the action, with just about everyone making the same amount of tackles, something the coaches like to see.

This region win puts Monticello in good position going into this week’s game against Morgan County, who is undefeated in region play. “This Friday is huge” Coach Huff replied about the upcoming game. “Morgan County is probably the best coached team we have seen thus far. They have a lot of weapons. It should be a challenge.”

A win this Friday would put the ‘Canes in good position the rest of the season as far as playoffs are concerned.

All fans are encouraged to cheer on the ‘Canes tomorrow, Oct. 24 at 7:30 p.m. in Monticello. The Hurricanes will look to gain their fifth win of the season.
