Girls’ Softball Field Is Dedicated

The new Monticello Hurricanes girls’ softball field was dedicated last Thursday afternoon, and then the first game was played on it.

The field is located off Post Road, just north of the bus shop, behind the tennis courts.
Howard Fore, principal at Jasper County High School, welcomed those in attendance and introduced the national anthem. He then led the group in the pledge of allegiance.

Athletic Director Doug Huff then welcomed everyone to the new softball complex. He said it’s been a “long time coming.” He thanked the many people that worked so hard to make it a reality, including Thomas Gordon, Perry Hyde, Neal Legget and Russell Bennett.

He said they look forward to a lot of good times.
Phyllis Norwood, chairman of the Jasper County board of education said “this is a joyous occasion…a dream come true.” She said she was proud to do it for the students. She thanked everyone who helped, saying it was a collaborative effort.

She gave special recognition to Mr. Bennett for his time and monetary donations. An invocation was offered by the police department chaplain.
After that, each coach introduced the players on his or her team. Amanda Jenkins and Trey Smith coach middle school softball, and Christy English is junior varsity coach. Shannon Moore is the varsity girls’ softball coach.

Mrs. Norwood pitched the ceremonial first pitch and then the varsity girls began play against Greene County.
