Middle School Basketball

The Middle School Hurricane “Hoopsters” are headed to Carver Middle School this week for league tournament action.
The Lady ‘Canes were to play G.M.C. Wednesday evening in battle for a semifinal slot. The winner of that game will face Morgan County next Wednesday, Jan. 29 in Social Circle.
Just prior to tournament play, the young Lady ‘Canes traveled to Social Circle for a make-up game. The Lady Red Devils won 39-30. Brittney Standifer led the scoring with 20 points; Jasmine Pennamon added three points; Shae Roach and Whitney Barron, and Chasity Cribbs, 2 each; Jessilyn Asbell, 1.
The Lady ‘Canes were victorious at home last Friday beating G.M.C. 31-16. Standifer again led in scoring with 14 points; Pennamon, 8; Dominique Redd, 4; Barron and Talisha Smith, 2 each; and Lucia Villanionia, 1.
Friday’s win followed a 42-32 loss to Greene last Wednesday. Standifer again had 14 points; Pennamon, 11; Smith 3; Barron and Asbell, 2 each.
The Middle School Gentlemen Hurricanes are on a two-game winning streak heading into today’s tournament game against Social Circle at 4:30 p.m. in the Carver Middle School gym. The winner of today’s game will face Morgan County in the semifinals next Thursday, Jan. 30 at Social Circle.
The young ‘Canes have a good chance of meeting Morgan next week if they dominate the Red Devils today like they did in Tuesday’s make-up game. The ‘Canes won in a big way, 45-25. Coddy Carter had 20 points; Markese Thurman, 12; Octavious Epps, 6; Cortez Dudley, 5; and Michael Cook, 2.
The ‘Canes dealt G.M.C. a loss last Friday, 39-23. Carter again had a big game with 23 points; Cook added 6; Alton Standifer, 5; Dudley, 3; and Thurman, 2.
“The guys are picking a good time to step up their game and win headed into tournament time,” said coach John Hooper.
The squad loss to Greene last Wednesday, 41-28. Carter earned 10 points; Thurman, 8; Epps, 6; Standifer and Antonio Gantt, 2.
