Lady ‘Canes Are Tops in Tournament

The Lady Hurricanes were at the “top” of their game during the holidays earning the top spot in the 11th annual Bank of Gray Christmas Tournament held at Jones County High School.

The Region 7AA 7th ranked Lady ‘Canes finished the tournament undefeated after three games. In addition to bringing home the first place trophy, team members Akeila Tripp, Yakia Tripp and Traci Glawson were named to the All-Tournament Team.

The Lady Hurricanes can also boast of having the Tournament’s Most Valuable Player (MVP) listed on their roster. Junior Traci Glawson earned the MVP honor after a tournament performance that netted 76 total points. Miss Glawson scored 41 points in the championship game, her personal best yet, setting a tournament record. She was the high point leader in each competition.

The Lady ‘Canes began the three-game tournament with a 55-41 win over Perry. Glawson led the scoring in that game with 18 points; followed by Abbie Jackson, 11; Tripp cousins Yakia and Akeila had 10 points each; Chelsea Standifer, 4; and Brittney Jackson, younger sister of Abbie, 2.

The Lady ‘Canes soundly put away Washington County with a 72-42 victory on route to the top. Glawson again led the scoring with 17 points; followed by A. Tripp and A. Jackson, 14 points each; Y. Tripp, 8; Susanna Tripp, 6; Standifer, 4; B. Jackson, 3; Ciera Johnson, Shaquayla Thurman, and Kenikeral Waller, 2 each.

The best match-up for the team came in the championship game which was forced into overtime against Dublin. Despite a sluggish first quarter in which they were outscored 21 to 6, the Lady ‘Canes gained momentum in the second and third quarters to earn a slight 49-47 lead going into the fourth quarter.

Tied at 64 at the end of regulation, the squad pulled off a four-point victory in overtime. Glawson earned 41 points; Y. Tripp, 16; A. Tripp, 11; and Standifer, 7.
