Sallye Ione Benton Newsome
Funeral services for Sallye Ione Benton Newsome, 92, of Athens, were to be held today, Dec. 31, at 10 a.m. at St. James United Methodist Church in Athens, with a viewing scheduled from 9:30 to 10 a.m., and after the service. Interment is planned for 2 p.m. at West View Cemetery in Monticello.
The Rev. David Staton will officiate the Athens service, and the Rev. Gus Cole will officiate in Monticello.
Mrs. Newsome died Saturday at St. Mary’s Hospital in Athens.
Mrs. Newsome was a native of Jasper County. She lived in Columbus for a number of years before moving to Athens. Her parents were the late Taney Oliver Benton and Lucie Comer Witte Benton.
She held a very active church life as a member of the Monticello First United Methodist Church, and Wynnton United Methodist Church in Columbus.
In 1974, she became a member of the St. James United Methodist Church in Athens. As a young woman, she was a secretary for the Piedmont project in Jasper County. From 1938 to 1944 she was secretary for the Quarter Master’s office at Fort Benning. She was a volunteer with the public school system in Columbus, and was a homemaker.
Her husband, Heyward Carson Newsome; brother, Taney O. Benton; and sisters, Lucie Adams and Hazel Benton, all preceded her in death.
Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Phyllis Newsome Field and David Charles Field of Bogart; granddaughter and grandson-in-law, Laura Benton Horne Lowery and F. Harris Lowery, Jr. of Athens; brother and sister-in-law, Louis W. Benton, Sr., and Kathryn Benton of Monticello; and a number of nieces and nephews.
Serving as honorary pallbearers will be the St. James United Methodist Church Fellowship Class and the Jolly Goodtimers.
The family suggests memorials to the United Methodist Church Children’s Home, Inc., 500 S. Columbia Drive., Decatur, GA 30030.
