Middle School ‘Canes Are Winless

The middle school Hurricanes are still without a win following a 36-14 loss to Greene County during their first and only home game last Wednesday.

The ‘Canes took an early lead in the first quarter on a touchdown scored by Darius Colvard. The Tigers immediately retaliated with a touchdown on a punt return and a two-point conversion. And the Tigers scored again before the half taking it to 14-6.

Both squads managed to more than double their first half score after returning to the field. Quarterback Marquese Thurman managed to make it into the end zone for another 6 points but it was the last time the ‘Canes would score.

“Our backs ran the ball extremely well; we just need more blocking,” said head coach Mike Johnston.

He commended quarterback Thurman on running the ball hard; Ethan Huff for superb blocking as the split end; and C.J. Beasly for punting the ball well.

Both head coach and assistant coach Alvarez Thomas said that the defense played well despite what the score might suggest about the game. Coach Thomas praised the defensive efforts of Colvard and Brandon Coe.

“We couldn’t stop the blitz. If we get to the corners we’ll be good,” said the coach.
The squad had another week off this week while preparing to face G.M.C. next Thursday, Oct. 2 in Milledgeville. They will wrap up their season at Morgan County on Wednesday, Oct. 8.

“Winning the next two games would help us to make it to the league play-offs with a 2-2 record,” Coach Johnston said. “Nevertheless, I want football to remain fun for the team and to keep them out there enjoying it.”
