Traci Glawson Is A 49er

Traci Glawson signed with the Charlotte 49ers of the University of Charlotte in North Carolina last Wednesday.

Her parents Arthur and Vickie Glawson, basketball coach Dionka Davis, athletic director Doug Huff, and fellow Lady Hurricanes assisted the 6’0 forward as she signed her letter of intent. She will receive a four-year scholarship.

She has been rated 30th in the nation at power forward by the All Star Girls Report. Last season, she helped the Lady Hurricanes post a 26-3 record, averaging 22 points, 10 rebounds, and 2 blocks per game.

As a sophomore and junior, she was the Region 7AA Player of the Year and earned second-team Class AA all-state honors. The three year starter has scored more than 1,000 points and was named to the All-Region team each year. She was the 2003 Jones County Tournament Most Valuable Player scoring 41 points.

Traci has also been invited and participated in the past two Adidas Top Ten All-America Camps.
Charlotte head women’s basketball coach Katie Meier, the 2003 Conference USA Coach of the Year, announced that Traci and four other high school seniors signed national letters of intent to play for the 49ers as freshman for the 2004-05 season.

“The first time I saw Traci play, I fell in love with her intensity and her physical style,” Meier said. “She does not back down from anyone. She brings a blue collar work ethic to the program. Every team that I have seen her play on, she has done whatever the coach has needed.”

The coach continued,”When she’s been asked to score, she scores. When she’s been asked to rebound, she rebounds. When she’s been asked to defend, she defends. She will be a real important part of what we are doing here at Charlotte.”
“My favorite thing about Traci is that she continually gets the ball for her team, and generally her team wins because of that.”

Though Traci is excited about playing as a 49er, she will begin her final season as a Lady Hurricane in eight days. She has grown very fond of her high school coach and her fellow teammates, all of whom she requested participate at her signing last week.

Coach Davis, who was voted Region 7AA Coach of the Year the same year Traci was named Player of the Year, said that Traci will be missed greatly.
“Traci is a good athlete and student and I know she will make an excellent 49er.”

Traci wanted to acknowledge the guidance she has received from Coach Davis and Georgia Dream Team coaches Guy Coleman and Jonathan Davis.

Joining Traci in Charlotte will be fellow Georgian Tyhiesha Smith of Augusta, Sabrina Gregory of North Carolina, Whitney Hoey of South Carolina, and Tameka Smith of Texas. Each ranks among the top 100 players in the country at her position, including three that are ranked in the top 30. Three of the signees are All-Americans or have earned All-American honors in their high school careers.

“This is a great day for Charlotte basketball,” Meier said. “We set out to recruit off of our success from last year and pushed for the ‘next-level’ player. It was a courageous and ambitious goal, and we are certainly pleased with the result of signing these five nationally-ranked recruits.”

Under Meier’s direction last season, the 49ers won 21 games, including 12 in league play to claim their first C-USA regular-season championship. The team was rewarded for their hard work with the program’s first bid ever to the NCAA Tournament.

“Charlotte has done an outstanding job of putting this class together,” Kelvin Powell of Roundball Journal said.

“It will probably be one of the top 10-15 classes in the Southeast, one of the toughest regions in the country. They have every reason to be excited, not just for next season in Conference USA but also once they move to the Atlantic 10. They’ll be able to make a lot of noise in the A-10, especially if they continue to bring in classes like the one they just signed.”

“We’ve had a lot of success with our pressing defense and fast-paced offense in our two years here at Charlotte,” Meier said. “These five signees are absolutely perfect fits for the direction this program moving.”
