Cougar Girls Improve

Improvement is the word Piedmont Academy girls basketball coach Chip Champion uses when talking about his Lady Cougars.

The Piedmont girls are currently 0-3, but Champion said the team has improved and progressed in each game.

After falling to Nathanael Greene in their season opener, the Lady Cougars fell to John Hancock 49-27 on Nov. 20. Mandi Pulliam was the leading scorer with nine followed by Heather Lewis with six.

“It was the same story as our opener,” Champion said. “We didn’t play that well against a good team. Our inexperience showed in the game. We had too many turnovers. I do think we improved from the first game in several areas, however.”

Piedmont then fell to Edmund Burke 37-32 on Nov. 22 despite 10 points from both Diana Hardy and Pulliam. After a slow first quarter, the Lady Cougars out-scored Edmund Burke 31-27 in the game’s final 24 minutes.

“Our inexperience showed late in the game,” Champion said. “We weren’t able to finish them off. I think the next time we will handle that situation better.”

Both Piedmont teams will face Windsor Friday as part of the Trinity Christian Tip-Off Tournament beginning at 4 p.m. in Dublin. Piedmont’s teams will then play host Trinity Saturday beginning at 5 p.m.

The Piedmont teams return home Tuesday against Mt. Pisgah at 6 p.m.

“I am proud of what the girls have accomplished so far,” Champion said. “I know the girls are frustrated somewhat, but we are making progress and that’s all I can ask.”
