JV ‘Canes Start Season With Wins
Wins marked the start of the basketball season for the junior varsity Hurricane squads in their opener hosting Jones County.
The Lady ‘Canes, currently 1-2, beat the Greyhounds 28-15. Erica Vinson was the leading scorer with 13 points; Telisha Smith, 6; Brittany Whidby, 5; Danielle Miller and Shantavious Epps, 2 each.

The initial win was followed by two losses on the road. They fell 19-37 to GMC Saturday. Vinson was the leading scorer with 5 points; Victoria Wallace and Britney Whidby, 4 each; Smith, 3; Whitney Barron, 2; Epps, 1.
The Lady ‘Canes, coached by Alvarez Thomas, fell 25-40 to the Lady Bulldogs of Mary Person Tuesday. Smith led with 7 points; Barron and Vinson, 5 each; Wallace and Miller, 3 each; and Whiby, 2.
The JV ‘Canes, currently the only undefeated Hurricane squad, defeated the Jones County Greyhounds 50-43. With the exception of a halftime tie, the Canes led the entire game.
Horace Shivers was the leading scorer with 17 points; Alvin Bailey had 13; Whichard Standifer and Brandon Hamm, 8 each; Cortez Dudley and Josh Campbell, 2 each.
The squad, coached by veteran Rydell Jackson, took their winning ways on the road Saturday with a 31-25 victory at GMC. Standifer led with 13 points; Bailey had 10; Hamm, 4; Shivers and Dudley, 2 each.
Both JV squads will face Putnam at home Saturday, Dec. 13 beginning at 4 p.m. before a three-week hiatus for the holidays.
