Varsity Cougars Sweep Windsor
The Piedmont Academy varsity basketball teams earned a sweep of Class AAA Windsor Dec. 19.
The Lady Cougars earned a 50-45 win for their second victory of the season while the boys avenged a loss from earlier in the year with a 60-58 decision.
The Piedmont girls (2-9 overall) had four players in double figures against the Lady Knights. Bailey Myers finished with 14 points while Mandi Pulliam, Heather Lewis and Diana Hardy all scored 12 points.
“We played as about a complete game as we have all year,” said Piedmont coach Chip Champion of his Lady Cougars. “It shows the improvement that we have made.”
Windsor had previously defeated the Lady Cougars 46-27.
The Piedmont boys (5-3 overall) used a 15-foot jumper by Taylor Marsh at the buzzer for their win Friday night. Marsh finished with a team-high 23 points while Ben Worthen scored 12 and Josh Daniel finished with 10. Daniel had three 3-pointers in the contest.
“That was a good win for the boys,” Champion said. “Windsor beat us earlier in the season in a game we felt like we could have won. Josh stepped up with his best shooting performance of the season. His 10 points really made a difference.”

The Piedmont teams were not as fortunate the following day as they were swept by visiting Gatewood Dec. 20. The Lady Cougars fell 58-17 while the boys were defeated 43-36.
The Lady Cougars trailed 20-4 after the first quarter and it only went downhill from there. Hardy was the leading scorer with 12 points for Piedmont.
Champion’s boys team also fell behind early and could never quite catch up. Marsh finished with 15 points for Piedmont.
“Both of our teams need some time off,” Champion said. “We are still battling sickness so it will be good to rest and regroup for the rest of the season.”
The Piedmont Academy varsity basketball teams will return to action Friday when they travel to John Milledge Academy for games beginning at 6 p.m.
