The Piedmont Academy varsity boys basketball team held on to defeat Oak Mountain Saturday 68-64.
The Cougars led by 13 points with three minutes to play before Oak Mountain began a rally.
“We tried to give it away at the end,” said Piedmont coach Chip Champion. “A few 3-pointers by them and a few turnovers by us and it was suddenly a game.”
The Cougars did manage to hold on, however, behind 24 points by Taylor Marsh. Ben Worthen and Andrew Fisher added 14 points each.
The offensive production by Piedmont was better Saturday than the previous night when the team fell to Heritage 35-29.

“That was a night where it seemed we couldn’t hit the backboard,” Champion said.
Doug Raynor led the Cougars with eight points. Overall, Piedmont was just 7-of-25 from the floor and 5-of-16 from 3-point range.
“We are a better shooting team than that,” Champion said.
The Piedmont Lady Cougars had a tough weekend, falling 51-28 to Heritage Friday and 28-23 to Oak Mountain the following day.
In the game against Heritage, the Lady Cougars were led by Mandi Pulliam with 11 points.
“We did some things well early, but youth showed itself in the third quarter,” Champion said.
The Lady Cougars were out-scored 20-0 in the third quarter.
The Piedmont girls played much closer against Oak Mountain before falling by five. Pulliam was once again the leading scorer with 10 points while Bailey Myers added eight.
“We actually outplayed them in the second,” Champion said. “We really played well in the fourth quarter. We just need to put an entire game together. Right now we are still trying to improve and I told the girls to just go out each night and go for it.”
The Piedmont Academy varsity basketball teams will travel to Alpharetta Friday to face Mount Pisgah at 6 p.m. before hosting West Georgia Christian Saturday at 3:30 p.m. Piedmont will also host Fullington Tuesday at 6 p.m.
