The Piedmont Academy wrestling team is now in the heart of its schedule and has been impressive on the mat, according to coach Darrell Young.
The Mat Cougars are at disadvantage before each match since they forfeit several weight classes. Despite this, Piedmont is still finding success.
“We are wrestling well,” Young said. “The wrestlers are working hard and doing well against some tough opponents.”
Piedmont defeated Westfield on Jan. 5 on the fourth tie-breaker method.

The teams were tied at 36 after the matches but the Mat Cougars had more pins than Westfield. Ryan Young (119), John Motes (140), Blake Anglin (145) and Blake McMichael (152) each pinned their respective opponents from Westfield.
The Mat Cougars also hosted Weber Jan. 5 and fell 39-35 despite giving up 30 forfeit points. Allison Hirsch (103) earned a win while Young (119) and Rob Wynens (140) earned pins.
Last Thursday the Piedmont wrestling team traveled to Southland to face one the top wrestling programs in the GISA. The Mat Cougars’ points came on pins by Young at 119 and Frank Christian at heavyweight.
Piedmont then traveled to Perry last Friday and Saturday for the Westfield Team Invitational Tournament. Southland won the tournament while First Presbyterian was second.
Young won the 119-weight class and continues to be undefeated this season.
“We wrestled several times last week and I am proud of how our wrestlers did,” coach Young said. The coach said Andrew Stevenson (160) earned his first career pin in the Westfield tournament against his opponent from Eagles Landing.
Anglin, Wynens, McMichael and Christian each wrestled well in the tournament, coach Young said. Piedmont won 14 individual matches in the tournament.
The Piedmont Academy wrestling team will travel to George Walton Academy today at 6 p.m. for a tri-match, which will also feature Riverside. The Mat Cougars will then face Eagles Landing and Hidden Lakes Friday at 6 p.m. in McDonough and are scheduled to travel to Trinity Saturday beginning at 10 a.m.
