JV Cougars Improve

Piedmont Academy junior varsity baseball coach Kenny Roberts has a simple philosophy when it comes to his team.

Roberts wants his players to learn about the sport, improve with each game and prepare for their future roles as varsity players.
“Our players are improving and working hard,” Roberts said. “That’s what we are looking for with this group.”

The JV Cougars have several games under their belts this spring.

Piedmont opened the season with a 17-6 win against Brentwood. Josh Stevenson was the winning pitcher recording seven strikeouts in the contest. Ryan McBroom and Justin Atkins were both 2-for-3 at the plate with walks.

The second game of the season-opening doubleheader with Brentwood was called because of darkness after three innings with the Cougars trailing 6-5. Matthew Powell had two strikeouts in the game while Dylan Collins was 2-for-2 with a double.

Roberts’ team next faced John Milledge in a doubleheader. Piedmont fell 5-1 in the opener despite a home run by Atkins and a 2-for-2 performance by Josh Stevenson. Carter Greeson recorded three strikeouts.

John Milledge then took a 6-5 win in the nightcap although several Cougars had big outings offensively. Atkins continued his torrid pace by going 2-for-3 with a double. Nic Rebuelta and Powell were also 2-for-3.

Windsor swept a doubleheader from Piedmont 7-0 and 10-1. In the first game, Josh Stevenson threw four strikeouts while Buddy Morrison and McBroom both had one hit. Andy Hall was 2-for-2 at the plate in the second contest.

The JV team also played two games at Gatewood last Saturday. A 6-5 loss to host Gatewood overshadowed a strong effort by the Cougars, Roberts said.

Josh Stevenson fired another four strikeouts and went 2-for-3 at the plate with a double. Powell also added a double against Gatewood while Atkins was 1-for-1 with two walks.

Piedmont then defeated Thomas Jefferson Saturday 4-1 in its second game of the day as Hall earned the win. Hall also went 2-for-2 offensively while McBroom was 1-for-1 with a walk.

The JV Cougars will return to action Monday with a home doubleheader against Brentwood beginning at 3:30 p.m. The team will then host Gatewood Wednesday, March 30.
