Irene Roberts Malone

Irene Roberts Malone, 100, died Wednesday, March 30, at the Retreat Nursing Home.

Mrs. Malone was born in Tucson, Ariz. Her parents were the late Willis Milton and Irene Roberts. Her family moved to Monticello in 1919. She was a member of the Monticello First United Methodist Church.

She worked as a buyer, sales clerk and office manager for Benton Supply Company. After leaving Benton Supply Company, she retired from the Jasper Memorial Hospital as an insurance clerk.
She was a charter member of the Monticello Historical Society where she was co-author of the “Jasper County History” book.

Her son-in-law, James Fred Benton, Jr., preceded her in death.

Survivors include her daughter, Laree Malone Benton of Monticello; grandchildren, James Fred “Buster” Benton, III, of Thomasville, Rebecca Benton and William A. Felts of Thomasville, and Judge Eugene Malone and Christie Benton of Monroe; great-grandchildren, Will Felts, Boone Felts, Amelia Benton and Bartlett Benton; and niece, Jean Mays of Monticello.

Funeral services were to be held Friday, April 1, at 3 p.m. at the Monticello First United Methodist Church, with burial in West View Cemetery. The Revs. John Brown and Paul Miller were to officiate.

Pallbearers were Will Felts, Boone Felts, Larry Smith, L.O. Benton, III, Walker Lewis, Tom Pound and Carlton Henderson.

The family suggests memorials to one’s favorite charity.

Jordan Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
