Lady Cougars Head to State
It’s state tournament time.
The Piedmont Academy fast-pitch softball team will enter the postseason this weekend in hopes of making some noise in the state tournament.
The Class AA state fast-pitch tournament begins Saturday morning in Dublin.
Gatewood won the 1-AA title this fall with a perfect region record while Briarwood captured second place. Piedmont and Brentwood also qualified from the region.
The Lady Cougars enter the postseason with recent region wins over Monroe Academy and Ed-mund Burke.
Piedmont defeated Monroe 22-3 Monday in a game which lasted only four innings. Tucker finished with five strikeouts and also went 3-for-4 at the plate with a triple and five stolen bases.
Jennifer Mobley was 2-for-2 with a double, two stolen bases and a walk while Bailey Myers added a 3-for-4 performance.
The Lady Cougars only struck out once as a team as coach Kenny Roberts did his best to keep the game from getting even more out of hand. Several times, Roberts prevented runners from scoring on passed balls.
Last Thursday, Piedmont recorded a 13-2 region win against Edmund Burke. Tucker was 2-for-3 with two runs and three stolen bases while striking out 11 batters as the winning pitcher.
Emily Beckham went 2-for-4 and scored a run while Mobley was 1-for-2 with two runs scored.
The Lady Cougars finished the regular season with a 7-5 mark in Region 1-AA (10-10 overall).
