Lady Cougars Conclude State Action
The Piedmont Academy fast-pitch softball team was the definition of the word “young” this season.
The Lady Cougars, coached by Kenny Roberts, had just one senior and one junior as all other players on the varsity roster were sophomores, freshmen and eighth graders.
Piedmont finished 2005 at 12-12 overall with an 8-5 record in region play. The Lady Cougars won a game at the Class AA state tournament in Dublin and will have a solid nucleus back next year.
“I am very proud of all of our players,” Roberts said. “We played through injuries and sickness. We started the season with 12 players but finished with nine. This team was very young. All returning players are very involved in athletics throughout the year.”

One of the goals for Roberts for 2006 will be to find pitching depth to assist Carrie Tucker, who had to shoulder the pitching burden alone this season. Tucker pitched 145 innings in 2005 recording156 strikeouts with a 3.18 earned run average.
Offensively, Tucker was .472 at the plate with five triples, three doubles, one homerun, 28 stolen bases and 28 runs scored.
Danielle Morgan finished with a .282 batting average with a double. Jennifer Mobley batted .231 with a double, 18 walks, 10 stolen bases and 20 runs scored. Emily Beck-ham batted .258 with two doubles.
