Cougar Statistics Listed
The 2005 football season ended with a trip to the state playoffs for the Piedmont Academy Cougars and a 6-5 overall record.
Several players had standout seasons for coach Danny Camp this fall. The Cougars finished as the No. 2 seed from Region 4-AA and also earned the right to host a home playoff game.
Lance Richardson finished the season as the leading rusher for Piedmont with 942 yards along with seven touchdowns. J.J. Tweedell totaled 704 yards and seven touchdowns. Freshman Justin Atkins rushed for 589 yards on 96 attempts with another seven scores.Patrick Simoes was the fourth leading rusher for the Cougars with 311 yards and six touchdowns on 59 attempts.

Piedmont was primarily a rushing team this fall using a newly installed double wing offense. The Cougars’ best game on the ground came against Windsor as they registered 452 yards on just 36 attempts, an impressive 12.6 average.
Camp’s team also rushed for 333 yards in a win against John Hancock in the second game of the season. Piedmont’s backs averaged 7.7 yards per carry in that contest.
On nine occasions, Piedmont’s backs went past the 100-yard mark for a game. The best performance was by Tweedell who rushed for a 221 yards on only eight carries against Windsor. Atkins had 187 yards on nine attempts against John Hancock.
On the defensive side of the football, Piedmont was led by Tweedell’s total 75.5 tackles, 46 of which were solo stops. The senior also had seven tackles for a loss, three quarterback sacks and three fumble recoveries.
Whit Morgan and Gree Roberts both finished with 54.5 total stops while Simoes had 51.5. Morgan also had four sacks, three tackles for loss, one fumble recovery and one interception while Roberts added four tackles for negative yards, three sacks and four fumble recoveries.
Richarson was also a force on defense with 47 total tackles and an interception. Zac Hauther recorded 28 solo tackles and 24 assists.
Other defensive leaders included Atkins (34.5 total tackles), Randy Reagin (30.5 total tackles), Cris Jackson (30 total tackles) and Christopher Hornibrook (25.5 total tackles).
Andrew Stevenson finished the 2005 season with 23.5 total stops while Chris Brunton added 22.5.
The 2006 football schedule had been released and Piedmont will once again open the season against Nathanael Greene. The game is scheduled for September 1 in Siloam.
Other non-region opponents for the Cougars next fall will include Central Fellowship, John Hancock, Gatewood, Windsor, Trinity and Valwood.
Piedmont will compete in a revamped Region 4-AA along with Mt. Vernon, Holy Spirit, Heritage and Monroe Academy.
