Free Throws Cost Lady Cougars
It didn’t take Piedmont Academy Lady Cougars basketball coach Kenny Roberts long to determine what cost his team Tuesday night in a 36-33 overtime loss to Windsor.
All Roberts had to do was look at his team’s performance from the free throw line where the Lady Cougars were just 7-of-22 overall and only 1-of-6 in overtime. Windsor, on the other hand, was 8-of-10 from the three throw line in the fourth quarter and overtime.
“We had several chances to win the game late,” Robert said. “However, you can’t have the night we did at the free throw line and expect to win many close games. We played well overall, but we have to do better at the line.”
Emily Beckham and Bailey Myers both scored nine points and had six rebounds for Piedmont Tuesday night.
Prior to Tuesday night’s overtime game, the Lady Cougars fell to Flint River 54-39 Saturday. Myers finished with 12 points and six rebounds while teammate Carrie Tucker added nine points and seven boards.
The Piedmont girls also fell to John Millege 51-30 last Friday. Myers was once again the leading scorer with 11 points along with seven rebounds. Tucker finished with eight points, 11 rebounds and six steals.
Myers has played well this season for Piedmont as she was also the leading scorer in the 41-36 win Nov. 30 against Nathanael Greene with 12 points. In that game, Tucker added 11 points and nine rebounds while Kirstie Lewis scored 10. Beckham added eight points and nine boards.
The Lady Cougars, who are now 1-4 overall, will play in a tournament hosted by Trinity Friday and Saturday. Robert’s team will play Westfield Friday at 4 p.m. in its tournament opener. The Lady Cougars will then host Nathanael Greene Monday at 6 p.m.
