MMS Lady Canes Earn First Win in Two Seasons

The Monticello Middle School Lady Hurricanes won their first game of the season in grand fashion last week against Greene County Middle School.

The 21-18 triumph was in fact the squad’s first win in two seasons under the leadership of Amanda Jenkins. In their previous three games of the season, the team had yet to score in the double digit range.

During the first quarter it appeared that the Greene Lady Tigers might run away with the scoring largely due to two aggressive shooters with precise outside shots and drives to the basket. However, the Lady Canes started a second quarter surge to get into the game and finish the first half down by only 5.

To open a strong Lady Cane second half, Iesha Nix made the first basket which was followed up by a 3-pointer from Chelsea Reaves to tie the game. From that point the squad came up with some fast break points to take the lead while pressuring the Lady Tigers with some key man-to-man defense.

The game came down to an intense final minute of action with the much of the crowd on its feet.
With .47 seconds on the clock, the Lady Canes had a one point lead as Greene prepared to inbound the ball. Luckily that possession produced no points and Shenelle Lewis drew a foul that resulted in her nailing both free throws with 6.2 seconds remaining.

Scorers included Chelsea Reaves with 6 points; Tamara Cloud and Iesha Nix, 4 points each; Shenelle Lewis, 3; Brianna Braswell and Amber Thomas, 2 points each.

Unfortunately the young Lady ‘Canes weren’t able to produce that same amount of energy needing to earn a victory against Morgan County on the road last Friday.

During their Greene competition, the Gentlemen Canes couldn’t match the intensity of their female counterparts to charge ahead in their 50-40 loss. They also fell 49-32 to Morgan on the road Friday. No statistics from either game were available prior to publication.

Despite not earning a win thus far, the boys have played competitors really well, losing in close competitions. The middle school squads will travel to Loganville tomorrow, Dec. 16. Game time is 4:30 p.m.
