‘Canes Compete in Sweet South Classic
The Monticello Lady Hurricanes and Gentlemen Hurricanes concluded the Social Circle bracket of the Sweet South Classic with seventh and fifth place finishes, respectively, last week prior to making a Tuesday road trip to Greene County to take on the 7AA Region Tigers.
Both squads began the tournament with bad draws on opening day. The Lady ‘Canes played the first game of the tournament at 9:30 a.m. last Wednesday against AAAA squad Rockdale County. That contest resulted in a 62-49 loss that led the ladies to face Paideia the following day playing at 9:30 a.m. again.
The opponent, who faced the Lady ‘Canes three years ago during the state playoffs, triumphed 56-29. That loss positioned the Lady Canes for a seventh place consolation game against familiar opponent G.M.C. They won 50-19 while Rockdale went on to claim the championship title among the eight competitors in their bracket.
The Canes finished fifth after picking up the momentum following their opening day loss, 82-42, to Rockdale. Last Thursday the squad defeated Prince Avenue 76-62 and polished off Paideia 67-47 on Friday to earn their mark among eight teams.

The Hurricane squads traveled to Greene County for a region challenge Tuesday that resulted in defeat for the local squads. The girls fell by 9 while the boys had a tougher go of it losing by 38.
The term “ugly” came to mind when boys head coach Steve Spruell spoke of the 77-39 loss. The Tigers are state ranked and the coach gave credit where credit was due. In his opinion everything Coach Spruell saw his team face Tuesday leads him to believe that Greene will go undefeated in the regular season while also considering an undefeated and state ranked Josey squad.
With nine more games on tap, all of them will be region competitions for the Hurricane teams as they battle for region placements. Laney of Augusta will come to town Friday, Jan. 6 for a varsity only competition beginning at 6 p.m. The varsity squads will be off Saturday, Jan. 7 as the junior varsity squads travel to G.M.C.
