Virginia Nell Jordan Phillips
Services for Virginia Nell Jordan Phillips were held January 17 at the Jubilee Christian Center in Boston, Ma. Family will receive friends Wednesday, Jan. 18 from 6-7:30 p.m. at Smith & Sons Funeral Home. The burial is scheduled for Thursday, Jan. 19 at 11 a.m. in South View Cemetery in Monticello.
She died January 9 at Brigham and Women Hospital in Boston following an extended illness.
Mrs. Phillips was born March 14, 1936 to the late Ulysses and Opie Lee Rooks Jordan. As a teen she joined Springfield Baptist Church where she attended regularly and began serving as Sunday School secretary and was a member of the choir.
She graduated as valedictorian in 1954 from the Jasper County Training School. While studying at Albany State College she met and married the late Charles L. Phillips. As a Navy wife she lived in Norfolk, Va., San Diego, Ca., and Boston, Ma. Upon moving to Boston she joined the Jubilee Christian Center.
Mrs. Phillips was known for cooking, sewing, and childcare. She managed a day care business and served as a foster parent to many youth.
Three brothers, Ulysses Jr., Harrylon “Pep,” and Samuel David Jordan, preceded her in death.
Survivors include children, Fleeta Renee Phillips of Dorchester, Ma., Sondra Rosetta Phillips of Stoughton, Ma., Valerie Lynn Phillips and Charles Leon Phillips, both of Mattapan, Ma.; grandchildren, Tamika Danielle Phillips, Jeremy Josiah McNeil-Phillips, and Jordan D’Arcy Phillips of Stoughton, Ma.; great-grandchildren, Marika Zane and Che Malik Phillips; sister, Opal Jordan Simmons of Monticello; brother, James T. Jordan of Atlanta; two sisters-in-law; aunt; a devoted nephew; aunt, Georgia C. Rooks of Eatonton; and a number of other relatives and friends.
Smith & Sons is in charge of local arrangements.
