E. Glover Jordan

Erasmus Glover Jordan, Jr., 84, died Friday, Jan. 20, at his home in Monticello.

A lifelong resident of Monticello, Glover Jordan was the son of the late Erasmus Glover Jordan, Sr. and Myrene Phillips Jordan. He was preceded in death one month ago by his wife of 59 years, Frances. He was the longest standing member of Monticello Presbyterian Church and served as a deacon, elder, and treasurer.

Mr. Jordan graduated from Emory University, joined the Navy in August, 1942, and received a commission as Ensign in the Navy through the V-7 program at Columbia University. He served on the USS Brisk and was the Gunnery Officer on the USS Donaldson DE 44, where he saw action in both the Atlantic and Pacific theatres of operation in World War II. He survived the December 18, 1944 typhoon in the Pacific in which three destroyers and 790 men were lost.

As owner of E.G. Jordan Furniture company, his store became “Hurricane Central” for local sports fans. On August 26, 2005 “Mr. Glover” was honored as the Original Super Hurricane Fan. His support of young people in the community is also evidenced by his service as assistant Scout Master for Troop 57 for many years.

He also served as Director of McIntosh State Bank for many years.

He is also preceded in death by his grandson, John Hunter Jordan.

Survivors include sons and daughters-in-law, James Glover and Mary Lou Jordan and Steven Walker and Lynne Jordan: brother and his wife, W. Phil and Clydie Jordan; and sister-in-law Virginia Benton Walker, all of Monticello; grandchildren, Jessalyn and Jason Alexander of Sandersville; Nathan Jordan of Decatur, Walker and Jen Jordan of Macon, Lucye Jordan of Atlanta, and Bonner Jordan of Auburn, Ala.; and great-granddaughter, Mary Preston Alexander.

Funeral services were held Sunday, Jan. 22, at Monticello Presbyterian Church in Monticello. Burial was in West View Cemetery in Monticello. The Revs. Malcolm Davis, Jake Marshall, and Phillip Dennis officiated.

Pallbearers were Bob Jordan, Dan Jordan, Joseph Gasses, Ray Lanier, Cal Phillips, Brian Phillips, Tommy Jordan, and Robert Jordan.

The family suggests memorials to the Monticello Presbyterian Church, P.O. Box 308, Monticello, GA 31064.

Jordan Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
