JV Cougars Gain Experience
For coach Kenny Roberts, the objective is simple when it comes to the players on his Piedmont Academy junior varsity baseball team.
Roberts wants his players to gain experience to help them in the future when they move up to the varsity level. Roberts had a “no cut” policy which encourages all prospective players to compete for the team and to enjoy the sport.
“We also stress the importance of playing for your school,” Robert said. “Some of the players also compete in recreation baseball which allows them the chance to gain more experience.”
The JV Cougars have several games under their belts this spring and have managed to record several wins as well.
Piedmont opened the season March 2 falling 11-0 to John Hancock. Sam Cleary and Buddy Morrison were the offensive leaders in the opener.
The JV Cougars then defeated Briarwood 7-4 two days later for their first win of the spring as Morrison went 2-for-3 and Carter Greeson earned the win.
Piedmont dropped a 17-2 decision to Gatewood March 7. Dakota Collins had a strong day at the plate with a 2-for-2 performance.
Roberts’ JV team then defeated Nathanael Greene 14-1 March 9 as Daniel Jackson earned the win. Luke Harvey paced the offense with a 4-for-4 day with two walks.
A 7-4 loss to Windsor followed on March 11 and Daniel Lein-weber was 1-for-3 in that contest.
The JV Cougars bounced back last Saturday with an 8-7 win against visiting Briarwood. Matt Sessions earned the win while Greeson also worked several strong innings to record the save.
Harvey was 3-for-3 with two doubles in Saturday’s win. Roberts also praised the efforts of first baseman Trevor Wilson, who was involved in six of the game’s last nine outs and made several strong defensive plays from his infield position.
Roberts and assistant coach Jeff Perkins have 19 players on the team this season.
The JV Cougars plan to host John Milledge today and Gatewood next Wednesday. Both games begin at 4 p.m.
