‘Canes Fall 11-1
The Varsity ‘Canes were defeated 11-1 by North Oconee on Tuesday, April 18. It was their fifth loss in a row and third region loss since defeating Laney earlier this month.
They gave up three runs in the top of the first, but then held the Titans scoreless for the next three innings, during which pitcher Brian Anderson retired nine out of 10 batters.
The Titans scored another run in the top of the fifth, but the ‘Canes spoiled the shutout in the bottom of the inning when J. C. Dunagan drew a walk, stole second and third, and came home to score the ‘Canes’ only run on a sacrifice by Alex Jordan, to make the score 5-1.
But the Titans went on to score five more runs in the sixth and two in the seventh. The Titan pitcher, who pitched a no-hitter earlier in the year, struck out nine ‘Canes and retired the first 10 batters he faced.
The ‘Canes could only muster two hits, both singles, by freshmen Ethan Huff and Kyle Byrd.
Their next game is scheduled for this Friday, April 21 versus Westside in Augusta at 4:30 p.m.
The last five games are all region games and the ‘Canes stand a good chance to win four of them since they have already beaten Laney and Josey, and played Greene and Putnam close. If this happens they could end up 6-6 in region play.
