Two Canes Will Compete in State Track

Shondra Williams and James Lawrence, Jasper County High School senior and junior, are headed to the state track competition as representatives of the 7AA Region.

Miss Williams, the sole Lady Hurricane track competitor this year, did extremely well during region competition held last week in Augusta.
During the competition, she earned first place in the long jump with a 16 foot, 7 inch jump and first in the 400 meter dash run with a time of 1 minute and 25 seconds.

The Lady Cane placed third in the triple jump with a jump of 33′ 1″ while also tying for first as the high point leader in the girl’s division.

State competition for Miss Williams starts today in Albany with qualifying for the finals. The competition will conclude Sunday, May 6.

She will be competing in the long jump and 400 meter dash by virtue of earning the her region victories.

Miss Williams is the daughter of Johnny and Myrtice Williams of Monticello.

Mr. Lawrence wrapped up region competition on Tuesday at Morgan County High School. He earned first place in the discus with a throw of 131.5 inches and will travel to state competition in Jefferson slated to begin next Thursday, May 11.
During the boys’ region tournament, the 4 x 100 relay team of Justin Brown, Octavious Epps, Zaybo Jackson, and Darius Colvard placed eighth of 16 teams.

Track coach Robert Ingram said that he was looking forward to building on the success of this year’s young team in the future.
