Coach Pleased with Football ‘Canes

Athletic Director and head football Coach Doug Huff expressed his pleasure with the effort of his team at the spring purple and white game last Friday, which concluded two weeks of spring training.

Coach Huff went on to talk about the speed, size and strength of the team.

“I think we have a little more speed overall compared to last year, and we’re also stronger. But when it comes to size, we’re probably not quite as big as we were last year, because we lost five or six good sized kids.”

He also advised that there would be approximately 10 upcoming seniors, 17 juniors, and 18 to 20 sophomores.

When asked how he expected to fare in the new single A region next year, the coach said, “I expect us to be very competitive, but there are some very good and athletic teams in that region.

Some people see us dropping down in classification and think we should go 10 and 0, but it will still be a very competitive region.

“Lincoln and Twiggs Counties will probably be two of the toughest teams we’ll face. Lincoln will be the defending state champion and Twiggs got to the state quarter finals last year.”

Offensively, the ‘Canes will have a mix of pass and run this fall. “We have some good running backs and I like for them to run the ball,” Coach Huff said.

“But our returning quarterback threw for over 1200 yards last year, so we’ll also be throwing the ball. We did lose our top receiver but we have some young kids coming up. We’ll try to keep it as balanced as possible. Our basic defense will be a four-three, just like it was last year.”

The coach concluded by saying, “We’re excited about the number of kids we have out, and the kids are excited. The scrimmage game last Friday was mostly for them to show their excitement and for the fans to see the team.

“But the boys worked hard, we’re very proud of them and look forward to a great season.
