Cougar Sports Round-up
The schedule for the Piedmont summer league baseball team came to an earlier than expected end.
Scheduled games with Windsor and John Milledge were both canceled leaving the Cougars without any additional opponents during June. Despite Windsor and John Milledge backing out of their contests with the Cougars, coach Danny Camp said he believes the experience his players gained this summer will benefit them down the road.
“We got a few games in and that always helps,” Camp said. “We wish we could have played more, but I guess other schools weren’t able to finish their schedules for whatever reason.”
Attempts to line up other opponents were unsuccessful. Camp said he did have some calls from coaches at schools in the Georgia High School Association about scheduling games, but the coach felt it best to remain within the Georgia Independent Schools Association for summer league contests.
Since summer league games are not held during the school year, schools in the GHSA and GISA do often compete against each other.
The Cougars did manage to play three times against John Hancock during June, winning all three. Camp’s team recorded 5-4, 5-3 and 11-5 victories.
Several players stood out in those contests for Camp including Kale Blackshear, Randy Reagin, Andrew Stevenson, Zack Kenny, Joey Schroeder and Cris Jackson.
Looking ahead to the 2007 season, the Cougars will only have to replace one graduated player.
PIEDMONT NOTES: Camp said he will focus the remainder of the summer on off-season preparations for the start of football season. Piedmont will hold its first day of practice August 7.
Players continue to be involved in weight training several times each week. The season opener is set for Sept. 1 against Nathanael Greene.
•Piedmont Academy has also planned a benefit golf tournament for July 20 at Indian Creek Golf Course. The event, named the Piedmont Academy Athletics Golf Classic, will feature several former University of Georgia football players.
The cost for three-player teams is $450. The tournament is scheduled to begin at 11:30 a.m. Proceeds will benefit the Cougar Club.
