Football Season Is Close
Classes have been in session nearly two weeks in Jasper County, which means football season can’t be far away.
The high school football teams are practicing daily, and the Piedmont Cougars took part in a scrimmage last Friday. They will participate in another scrimmage today, Aug. 24.
The Monticello Hurricanes will travel to Henry County tomorrow, Aug. 25, for a scrimmage against Ola.
Both teams kick off their regular seasons next Friday, Sept. 1. The Monticello Hurricanes will travel to Social Circle for a 7:30 p.m. kick-off. The Piedmont Cougars will kick off their season at Nathanael Greene in Siloam.
Inside today’s print edition is a salute to fall sports which features the public and private high school and middle school teams—football, softball, cheerleading, band—as well as coaches, water girls and other support staff. The section is provided by our local banks, who constantly provide support to our local youth. Be sure to say thanks to the local bankers every chance you get for their great support of our community.

Many colleges will also kick off their seasons with games during Labor Day weekend. The Georgia Bulldogs will take on Western Kentucky, and the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets will host the fighting Irish from Notre Dame.
With so much action ahead on the playing field, The Monticello News doesn’t want anyone to miss out on the fun.
College football fans looking for insight on the upcoming season can find it here and now: It’s in the season’s first installment of the Gridiron Gazette inside today’s issue.
And it’s just in time to perhaps provide a few clues to readers who can begin playing The News’ annual Football Contest beginning next week. Once again sponsors will offer $25 weekly prizes to whoever picks the most winners of games listed, subject to a tiebreaker. And at the end of the season there will be grand prize drawing from qualifying contest players for a trip to the 2006 Peach Bowl.
Look for details and the first contest next week—in the Aug 31 issue. The first week’s winner will be named the following Tuesday, because Monday will be the Labor Day holiday, and his or her picture will be included with the sponsor in the following week’s issue. Don’t miss it!
There are 14 sponsors of the football contest and five sponsors of the Gridiron Gazette. As always, we encourage our readers to do business with our advertisers… those throughout the newspaper and those sponsoring these special promotions.
The Monticello News is YOUR local newspaper. Let us know what you like and don’t like. And as the football seasons begin, join us in supporting our local teams.
