Cougars Play Scrimmage Thursday

The Piedmont Academy varsity football team is now just eight days away from its 2006 season opener.
The Cougars, who open the new gridiron campaign Friday, Sept. 1 at Nathanael Greene in Siloam, are continuing preparations for their opener.

Coach Danny Camp’s team was able to scrimmage Edmund Burke and Curtis Baptist last Friday and will meet Brentwood in a preseason contest tonight at 8 p.m. as part of the jamboree hosted by John Hancock Academy in Sparta.

“While we are glad to get the preseason scrimmages, our mind right now is on Nathanael Greene,” Camp said earlier this week. “That’s when it counts for real.”

Piedmont’s third-year head coach said last Friday’s scrimmages against Edmund Burke and Curtis Baptist, hosted at Cougar Field, were productive for his team.

“Like any scrimmage that you have, there was some good and some bad,” Camp said. “Edmund Burke gave us a good test. We did some good things against them, but also made some mistakes. I do believe we are on the right track, however.”

Initially, only Edmund Burke was scheduled to attend, but Curtis Baptist coaches contacted Camp late in the week to see if their team could also participate.

“It was fine with us,” the coach said. “The more teams the better.”

The Piedmont defense had a strong outing against Curtis Baptist recording several interceptions.
“We are going to go back to work building on what we accomplished in last week’s scrimmages,” Camp said.

Prior to this Thursday’s jamboree contest against state power Brentwood, Camp said he plans to scout the Edmund Burke-Nathanael Greene contest to get a first-hand look at his team’s season-opening foe.

While the Cougars have been practicing for several days now, Camp said he believes there is still plenty to work on.

“It seems like as a coach you never have enough practice time,” he said. “There is always something you are looking to work and build on.”
