‘Canes Work During Off Week

After taking their seasonal bye-week last Friday, Monticello Hurricanes Athletic Director and Head Football Coach Doug Huff said the time off helped the team a lot.

“We had some things we needed to spend a good bit of time working on. This past Tuesday, Wed-nesday and Thursday we had three very good practices and got back to some of the fundamentals we needed to improve on. The time off allowed us to do the things we needed to do instead of having to prepare for an opponent.”

The team resumes action tomorrow night when it travels to Sparta, to take on the Hancock Central Bulldogs, the first game of region competition this season. Coach Huff remarked on the Bulldogs after having watched them play Monroe last Friday night.

“They are extremely athletic, very fast, and they don’t have any players that can’t run. Their quarterback is probably as good as any we’ll see. He is tall, large, can absolutely fly, and throws the ball very well. The key is being able to contain him, because if he gets outside of containment he is extremely dangerous.”

Coach Huff said no changes had been made in the team’s offensive scheme, but rather that they had just been working hard on what they do.

“Rather than the scheme,” he said, “it’s the execution we need to be concerned about. We have people in spots to make plays and we haven’t been making plays. The key for us is execution.

“This is a very important game for us to get started in the right direction on the region schedule. It’s like the preseason is over with and the real season begins tomorrow night. These are the ones that count.”
