Lady ‘Canes Win Three Region Games
Monticello’s Lady Canes Varsity Softball Team hosted the Wilkinson County Warriors on September 21 in a region contest, and defeated the Warriors 15-0 in four innings, when the game was called becasue of the run rule.
The Lady Canes had 11 hits in the abbreviated game. Leading hitters were Erika Bilbrey, 3 for 3 including 2 doubles and 1 triple with 2 RBIs; Amanda Phipps 2 for 4 with 1 RBI, and Autumn Peterson, 2 for 2 with 3 RBIs.
Shelby Britt pitched the shutout and recorded four strikeouts. Coach Brin Davis said she was very proud of the team.
“They worked hard this week and played well as a team today. Their bats are starting to come alive, which we will need throughout the remainder of the season.”

On Saturday, Monticello traveled to Johnson County for a rematch. The Lady Canes lost to Johnson County 11-0 last week. This game proved to be much more competitive. The Lady Canes gave up two runs early, but managed to shut out Johnson County until the seventh inning, giving up four additional runs, making the final score 6-0 in favor of Johnson County. Autumn Peterson had a good day at the plate going 3 for 3.
On Tuesday, September 26, the Lady Canes hosted Twiggs County for a Region double header contest. In the first game, Monticello defeated Twiggs 17-1, called after three innings on the run rule. Autumn Peterson got the win, striking out nine batters.
Leading hitters in the game were Amanda Peterson, 2 for 4 with a triple; Erika Bilbrey, 2 for 4; Chasity Cribbs, 2 for 3; and Chelsea Carter, 1 for 3.
In the second game, the Lady Canes again defeated Twiggs County 21-1, called again after three innings on the run rule. Amanda Peterson got the win in this game, striking out eight batters. The Lady Canes combined for a total of 20 hits. Amanda Phipps lead the hitting with 3 hits including 1 double.
The following players each had 2 hits Amanda Peterson, Erika Bilbrey, Megan Kildahl, Candice Allen, Shelby Britt, and Emily Johnston.
The Lady ‘Canes now have 6 wins with 7 losses overall, and in region play have 5 wins and 1 loss. The Lady Canes travel to Milledgeville today, Sept. 28 to play GMC and then on Thursday, Oct. 5, the Lady ‘Canes will play their last home game of the season hosting Hancock County.
Both are region games and start time is 5 p.m.
