Cougars Eke Out Win
It wasn’t the prettiest win the Piedmont Academy football team has recorded this season, but coach Danny Camp will still take it.
The Cougars improved to 3-2 this fall by rallying to defeat visiting Windsor 14-10 last Friday. Trailing 10-0 midway through the third quarter, Piedmont suddenly found some offense and was able to put enough points on the scoreboard for the victory.
“Windsor is a much improved team, there’s no doubt about that,” Camp said. “They have more depth this season and play 11 on offense and 11 on defense. I think we still had some carry over from our game against Gatewood. We didn’t have a good week of practice and we didn’t seem fired up for the next game. Still, we were able to find a way to win even though several things didn’t go our way.”
Trailing 3-0 at halftime, Piedmont found itself down by 10 following a third-quarter score by the Knights. The Cougars then got on the board on a 45-yard screen pass from Zac Hauther to Christopher Hornibrook.
After a defensive stand, Piedmont took the lead for the first time on a 17-yard option keeper by Hauther. Tyler Landress was successful on both of his point after kicks.
“Our defense did an outstanding job,” Camp said. “They kept us close and gave us a chance to come back and win.”
Hornibrook had two interceptions last week while D.J. Allen had one, which he returned for approximately 55 yards to stop a Windsor scoring threat.

Whit Morgan led the defense with eight tackles, a fumble recovery and a tackle for a loss. Allen finished with seven tackles in addition to his interception while Randy Reagin had seven stops. Reagin also deflected a Windsor pass at the line of scrimmage which Allen eventually intercepted.
Lance Richardson added 6.5 tackles while Andrew Stevenson added six tackles and had a fumble recovery.
“We were able to wake up offensively for about six minutes,” Camp said. “Fortunately, that gave us just enough points to get the win.”
Offensively, Richardson finished with 88 yards on 17 carries while Hauther rushed eight times for 40 yards. Hauther was also 4-of-6 through the air for 83 yards. Hornibrook caught two screen passes while Allen and Morgan both had a catch.
Camp knows it will take a much better overall effort this Friday when his team travels to Dublin to face Trinity at 7:30 p.m. The Crusaders enters the game at 4-1 overall.
“They are a very good team,” Camp said. “I think they will be the best team we’ve played this season. They are going to run straight at us. We will be working on some things this week in practice as we try to get ready for them.”
The Piedmont junior varsity football team ran into a buzz saw last week falling to John Milledge 44-0.
“Our JV is going to have to get better and get tougher,” Camp said. “We gave up too many big plays.”
Camp said Dylan Collins ran the football well for the junior varsity, but didn’t have much blocking help.
The Piedmont JV will travel to Gatewood today for a 6 p.m. contest.
