‘Canes Drop Fifth Straight

The ‘Canes dropped their fifth straight last Friday night when they were defeated by Warren County 42-13 at home for homecoming.

Athletic Director and Head Coach Doug Huff attempted to put the team’s status in perspective when he said, “I don’t want to look at our season as a rebuilding year because we have some seniors and juniors who play hard, but the fact of the matter is that due to injuries and other situations beyond our control, we have been forced to play these young kids, who have very little game experience. I am pleased that they are not intimidated, and with their efforts.

“We have freshmen and sophomores all over. We have sophomore Anthony Lentini who has started at guard for the last two weeks. Freshmen Joe Standifer has been playing middle linebacker and Kadarius Foster has had playing time at fullback and strong safety. Willie McGuire, Josh Boone and several other freshmen and sophomores have seen playing time.”

The most crucial position now being manned by a freshman is Keldrick Davis at quarterback.

Coach Huff said, “Keldrick has performed better than expected. Last week we only had one turnover and one interception, and he did a good job of taking care of the football. I was very pleased by the way he played. He’s the quarterback—I’ll just put it that way.”

Tomorrow evening the ‘Canes travel to Jeffersonville to take on the Twiggs County Cobras who are 3-4 overall. However, in region competition they are 3-1, tied for second place with Hancock, Warren and Wilkerson. Coach Huff said, “They have a division one prospect on their offensive line, along with some good running backs and an athletic quarterback. It’ll be a tough game. Jeffersonville is a tough place to play.”

On paper it doesn’t look to be an easy task for the ‘Canes. Earlier in the season the Cobras defeated Warren County 28-15, a team that defeated the ‘Canes 43-0 two weeks ago.

The good news is that senior Justin Brown has recovered from his injury and will likely be running the ball. Also, the ‘Canes did put 13 points on the board last week, showing that with experience and tenacity comes success, so they’ll be looking to sneak up on the snakes and skin ’em.
