Cougars Begin Playoffs Friday

For Piedmont Academy football coach Danny Camp, his team’s Region 4-AA championship is not something to be taken lightly.

The Cougars won their first region title in four years last Friday with a 44-7 thumping of visiting Monroe Academy. The victory capped a perfect region slate for Piedmont and gave Camp his first region football title as a head coach.
The win allows Piedmont to open the Class AA state playoffs at home this week against Edmund Burke.

“It is nice to regain control of the region,” Camp said. “This is a great group of players to work with. They are great kids. They work hard to prepare each week. This is something we are all excited about.”

The Cougars finished the regular season at 7-4 overall but more importantly a perfect 4-0 mark within the region. A loss last Friday could have caused a three-way tie for first, but Piedmont never gave Monroe a chance and took control early building a 34-point halftime lead against the Mustangs.

Lance Richardson helped lead the offense rushing for 119 yards on nine carries. Quarterback Zac Hauther hooked up with Whit Morgan for three passes for 65 yards. Piedmont did not have a turnover in the contest.

The playoff system within the GISA has changed this fall. Now teams must win three games to win the state title rather than four in previous years.
