Robert Wells

Funeral services for Robert Harold Wells, 82, were held Monday, Nov. 20 at Elam Baptist Church with burial in Elam Memorial Gardens in Jones County. Rev. Gary Thomas officiated.

He died Saturday, Nov. 18 at his residence.
Mr. Wells was born August 2, 1924 and was a lifelong resident of Jones County. He was the son of the late Joseph Carlton Wells and Hattie Odessa Roberts Wells.

He served in the United States Army during World War II in the European Theatre of Operation and was awarded two Battle Stars. Upon his return home, he worked as a train yard inspector for Central of Georgia Railroad, from which he retired.

Mr. Wells was also a tax consultant for 20 years. Active in his community, he served on the Jones County Tax Assessors Board, the Selective Service Board and the Board of Registrars. He was also a Charter Member of the Jones County Lion’s Club, serving as president, deputy district governor and Secretary for 20 years.

He was a past Worshipful Master of Masonic Lodge #430 and was a member of the Scottish Rite Bodies. A member of Elam Baptist Church, he served on the board of deacons, was the training union director, taught Sunday School, and served as the church clerk and the president of Elam Memorial Gardens.

Mr. Wells was preceded in death by a son, Marshall Keith Wells; sister, Geneva Williams; and brother, Harry Wells.

Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Margaret Sumner Wells of Jones County; children and spouses, Joan and Sam Thornton of Monticello, Tanya and Jimmy Crum of Bainbridge, Dr. Robert L. “Bobby” and Patty Wells of Gray, and Jan Young of Macon; sister, Vivian Wells of Jones County; brother, Warren Wells of Centerville; grandchildren, Robin and Matt Godwin, Dana and Brandon Pierce, Murray and Jennifer Maxwell, Whitney and Aaron, Arnett, Nicole and Michael Davis, Luke Thornton, Andy and Melanie Thornton, David Young, Beth Young and Leigh Thornton; great-grandchildren, Ashlyn Thornton, Maxwell Godwin and Jacob Davis; and several nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made to Elam Baptist Church, 203 Elam Church Road, Gray, Georgia 31032, or to the Georgia Lions Lighthouse Foundation, 1775 Clairmont Road, Decatur, Ga. 30033-4005.
