Piedmont Wrestlers Eye New Season

The Piedmont Academy wrestling schedule is set for 2006-07.

All coach Darrell Young has to do now is finalize his roster.

The Mat Cougars will begin the new season next Wednesday in a tri-match against Riverside and Windsor in Gainesville at 6 p.m. The second match of the season will be Dec. 15 against George Walton Academy and Windsor in Monroe at 5:30 p.m.
Piedmont will also compete in a tournament hosted by Tattnall Square Academy in Macon Dec. 16.

Coach Young has only had a few days to work with the wrestlers following the completion of football season and with Thanksgiving holidays.

He was planning to finalize the roster this week as names of official team members had to be turned into the state by the end of the week.

The GISA has divided its schools, which compete in wrestling into four region for 2006-07. The Mat Cougars will be in Region 1 along with Brandon Hall, Riverside, Mills Springs, Holy Spirit, Heirway, George Walton Academy, Hidden Lakes, Webber and Mt. Vernon.

The top four teams from each region will advance to the 16-school state tournament, which will be at the Perry Fairgrounds in February.

Young will have some experienced wrestlers this winter and several should have legitimate chances at doing well at state.
